Avery - 48
James Taylor gored to death by a bull at Ripe in 1890. As a result his wife Esther, needing support, moved to be with her brother at Rottingdean. She brought with her Lucy,11, James, 10, and Ernest aged 6.
Lucy had married James Leonard Avery (the connection with Avery)
Her brother, James Taylor, became a conductor on the Royal Oak horse bus run by Frederick Thomas which carried people from Rottingdean to Brighton. This ran in competition with Stephen Welfare’s horse bus run from the White Horse Inn. An account of such a journey may be found in Angela Thirkell’s book ‘Three Houses’ available from the Grange Gallery. The route was covered by a motorbus, then taken over by Tilling’s at which point James resigned to set up on his own as a carrier with a horse drawn covered wagon which he had built for him in Jubilee Street.
